Which of the following is not an instance of an exercise of fundamental right?
A. Workers from Bihar go to the Punjab to work on the farms.
B. Christian missions set up a chain of missionary schools.
C. Men and women government employees get the same salary.
D. Parent’s property is inherited by their children.
Right to Property is not a fundamental right and inheritance of parental property is governed by other property laws.
Which of the following freedoms is not available to an Indian citizen?
(a) Freedom to criticize the government.
(b) Freedom to participate in armed revolution.
(c) Freedom to start a movement to change the government.
(d) Freedom to oppose the central values of the Constitution.
Out of the above statements, the freedom that is not available to an Indian citizen is the freedom to participate in armed revolution. The Indian Constitution allows the citizens to protest any injustice but at the same time, an armed retaliation is unlawful and thus not allowed under the constitution. The central values of the constitution are considered the basis of the Indian democracy and thus if one opposes the central values of the constitution then it can be considered as a revolution against the state.
Hence, option (b) and (d) are correct.
Which of the following rights is available under the Indian Constitution?
A. Right to work
B. Right to adequate livelihood
C. Right to protect one's culture
D. Right to privacy
From the above statements, the right that is under our country’s constitution is the right to protect one’s culture.
Hence, option (C) is correct.

(b) Right to life
(c) Abolition of untouchability
(d) Ban on bonded labour
(a) Freedom to propagate one's religion: Right to freedom of religion

Which of these statements about the relationship between democracy and rights is more valid? Give reasons for your preference.
(a) Every country that is a democracy gives rights to its citizens.
(b) Every country that gives rights to its citizens is a democracy.
(c) Giving rights is good, but it is not necessary for a democracy.
From the above given statements option (a) seems more valid which says that “Every country that is a democracy gives rights to its citizens". We live in a democratic country so the functions of the citizens are very important.
Are these restrictions on the right to freedom justified? Give reasons for your answer.
(a) Indian citizens need permission to visit some border areas of the country for reasons of security.
(b) Outsiders are not allowed to buy property in some areas to protect the interest of the local population.
(c) The government bans the publications of a book that can go against the ruling party in the next elections.
(a) The first statement talks about the right as per the security of the country so it is justified. Border areas are very sensitive and if they are not monitored properly then there are chances of starting a conflict with the neighbors, which is not in the interest of the nation. Also, overly free borders can lead to unlawful infiltration and pose threat to citizens and national property.
(b) In several states like Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar, it is not possible for the outsiders to buy land. This is to prevent the moneyed outsiders to buy the land in these states and leave the local population impoverished. This has been and continues to be a point of heated argument and discussion amongst the lawmakers.
(c) The third statement is not justified as it is against the right of expression. The publisher and/or the author can file a case in the court against this ruling and get it revoked for being unconstitutional in nature.
Manoj went to a college to apply for admission into an MBA course. The clerk refused to take his applications and said "You, the son of a sweeper, wish to be a manager! Has anyone done this job in your community? Go to the municipality office and apply for a sweeper's position. Which of Manoj's fundamental rights are being violated in this instance? Spell these out in a letter from Manoj to the district collector.
Respected District Collector,
Sir,
I am not getting admission in MBA because I am a SC candidate. This is violating my right to equality as constitution of our country gives equal right to every individual irrespective of caste, gender or social background. So, no one can challenge my right to education. It is against the constitutional principles of our country.
I request you to look this matter personally and take some strict actions against the concerned authority.
Yours faithfully
Manoj
When Madhurima went to the property registration office, the Registrar told her, “You can't write your name as Madhurima Banerjee d/o A.K. Banerjee. You are married, so you must give your husband's name. Your husband's surname is Rao. So your name should be changed to Madhurima Rao." She did not agree. She said "if my husband's name has not changed after marriage, why should mine?” In your opinion who is right in this dispute? And why?
In the above case, Madhurima is right because according to our fundamental right there is equality to everyone and she can write her name according to her wish. No one has the right to compel her to write Rao as her husband writes with his name.
Thousands of tribals and other forest dwellers gathered at Piparia in Hoshangabad district in Madhya Pradesh to protest against their proposed displacement from the Satpura National Park, Bori Wildlife Sanctuary and Panchmarhi Wildlife Sanctuary. They argue that such a displacement is an attack on their livelihood and beliefs. Government claims that their displacement is essential for the development of the area and for protection of wildlife. Write a petition on behalf of the forest dwellers to the NHRC, a response from the government and a report of the NHRC on this matter.
Petitionon behalf of the forest dwellers to NHRC:
Sir,
We have lived in these forests for generations and have direct cultural links to them. It is a part of our being as we worship trees, mountains and rivers as deities. Our livelihood too depends directly on it as most of us are occupied by making, selling and dealing in articles that we get from the forest. This means that if we will be unrooted from the forests then our whole existence would come in crisis. Please look at these concerns with empathy.
Response from the government and the report of NHRC on this matter:
The constant existence of humans and their encroachment in the wild has led to several complications to the wildlife. This has also increased animal-human confrontations which has led to casualties on both sides. Thus, it is important for the displacement of the tribals for their as well as the animals’ protection. Also, the government is planning several development programs for the tribals and it would be possible to get along with these plans only if the tribals are moved from the forests.
Draw a web interconnecting different rights discussed in this chapter. For example, right to freedom of movement is connected to the freedom of occupation. One reason for this is that freedom of movement enables a person to got to place of work within one's village or city or to another village, city or state. Similarly this right can be used for pilgrimage, connected with freedom to follow one's religion. Draw a circle for each right and mark arrows that show connection between or among different rights. For each arrow, give an example that shows the linkage.
Diagram of web interconnecting different rights discussed in this chapter is as follows:
